Maine Learning Results Alignment
Maine Learning Results: Health Education and Physical Education
A6 Basic Health Concepts
Grades: 6-8
Students will explain essential health concepts related to family life; nutrition; personal health; safety and injury prevention; and tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use prevention.
Rationale: This lesson provides students with a deeper understanding of nutrition and the ways in which each health concept plays a role in maintaining our health.
Assessment
Formative (Assessment for Learning)
*I will observe students during the video presentation and discussion, but before the content presentation, I will pass out a KWL chart. Using this chart, students can record what they already know and what they want to learn. After the lesson is completed we will revisit the chart and students can fill in what they learned about nutrition and obesity.
Summative (Assessment of Learning)
*I will evaluate the final product of the iMovie and the team presentation using rubrics (see attached). Each pair of students will take turns presenting their product to the class, and the students will be filling out evaluations for each team.
Integration
Technology: The class will be using their laptops and internet to research for the WebQuest. They will also be using the iMovie program.
Math: Students will calculate BMI and BMR. They will also be preparing a healthy recipe with measurements and weights of the food.
Groupings
Students will be paired up to work on the WebQuest. I will allow students to choose their own partner, unless the students would rather the partners be picked for them. All of the details for what each pair of students need to do can be found in the WebQuest.
Differentiated Instruction
Strategies Visual: The hook will include a video clip on obesity. Verbal: The presentation of nutrition vocabulary. Logical: Students will be creating a recipe that requires measurements of ingredients. Musical: Students can include music or rhythms into their iMovie. Interpersonal: Students are working in pairs to complete the WebQuest. Kinesthetic: Students will be using laptops and will have to act to complete the WebQuest task. Intrapersonal: The KWL chart will allow students to work independently. Naturalist: Students will have to prepare a recipe on the WebQuest, so they will be working with food or even gardens.
Modifications/Accommodations
*. Students who are absent are responsible for making up the work they missed and meeting with the teacher to review lesson notes. They will be given an extension of two days for each day absent to complete homework and class assignments they may have missed. Assignments should be turned in on time, but an extension will be given to students who meet with the teacher prior to class.
Extensions
*I will incorporate Type II Technology into this lesson by providing students with resources to explore and research to complete the WebQuest task. Students will need access to a computer and the internet to research topics for the WebQuest, as well as using the iMovie program. Students will also need access to a video or digital camera.

Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and Rationale
Standard 3 - Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and cultural development. Rationale:I will provide students with a safe and comfortable classroom environment. The students and I should be supportive of each other’s opinions, and provide an encouraging atmosphere where it is safe for students to share their thoughts, questions, or concerns during class. I will provide time to students to work individually while filling out the KWL chart, and a group activity via the WebQuest. This project will meet any students’ needs. I have also organized this lesson to provide students with clear expectations and procedures.
Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory. Rationale: For this lesson, I will present students with some nutrition vocabulary, and introduce BMI and BMR calculations. The presentation will require students to recall previous instruction on nutrition and health. I will incorporate cooperative learning groups into this lesson through the pairing for the WebQuest. I will also review student’s IEP, 504 or ELLIDEP and make appropriate modifications and accommodations
Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technology to meet students’ needs. Rationale: This lesson addresses the Maine Standard for Initial Certification by incorporating all eight multiple intelligences. These will be addressed in the teaching and learning sequence as well as in the WebQuest. I will address visualintelligence in the hook. The hook will include a video clip on obesity. Verbal intelligence will be met during the presentation of nutrition vocabulary. Logical intelligence will be met while students create a recipe that requires measurements of ingredients. Students can address musical intelligence by including music or rhythms into their iMovie. Interpersonal intelligence will be met while students are working in pairs to complete the WebQuest. Kinesthetic intelligence will be met by students using laptops and acting out a cooking show to complete the WebQuest task. I will address intrapersonal intelligence with the KWL chart. Naturalist intelligence will be met while students prepare a recipe on the WebQuest, so they will be working with food or even gardens. The main use of technology for this lesson is found in the WebQuest and the creation of the iMovie as a final product.
Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner. Rationale: I will evaluate students’ final products in this lesson with two rubrics. One rubric is for the iMovie product and another is for the oral presentation of the iMovie. I will also make informal observations while students fill out their KWL charts.
Teaching and Learning Sequence:
The classroom will be arranged with student desks in groups of four spread out around the room. Agenda:
Video
Class Discussion
KWL chart
Presentation of nutrition vocabulary
Present WebQuest
Class will being with the viewing of the hook, which will be in the form of a video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=8HSqE1U_m_0). The video discusses nutrition and obesity, and also presents students with BMI calculations. Students will understand that that dietary needs differ from person to person. This will relate to the students' lives because everyone's diet requires a different variety of nutrients, but we also should follow some of the same guidelines. After watching the video, I will ask students to share what they learned from watching the video and what topics may need more explaining. (10 minutes) What, Where, Why, Hook, Tailors: Visual and Verbal.
I will hand out a KWL chart (see attached) for students to fill out before we proceed with the lesson. Using this chart, students can record what they already know and what they want to learn. I will then present students with some vocabulary terms (see attached content notes). These terms include starch, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and calorie. I will also discuss BMI (Body Mass Index) and BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) calculations. Students may recall some of this information from previous health classes or biology class, in which case the presentation will further their knowledge of the subject. Students will know vitamins, minerals, starch, fiber, calorie, BMI and BMR. (20 minutes) Equip, Explore, Rethink, Tailors: Intrapersonal, Verbal, and Logical
Students can revisit the previous lessons on family life, personal health, drug use, and kitchen safety to look at how these topics relate to each other. I will present the students to the WebQuest (http://students.umf.maine.edu/~minormb/nutritionwebquest/), but from there they should be able to follow the process of the WebQuest. Students will be working in pairs, and I will allow them to pick their own partner. During this time, I will be available for questions, concerns, and feedback while students are working. Students will have a total of one and a half classes to work on their WebQuest. It may be worked on at home because students will have access to it via the internet. (40 minutes) Explore, Experience, Rethink, Revise, Refine, Tailors: Verbal, Visual, Logical, Interpersonal, and Bodily-Kinesthetic
After the lesson is completed we will revisit the KWL chart and students can fill in what they learned about nutrition and obesity. I will evaluate projects and presentation with two separate rubrics (see attached). These rubrics will be available to students on the “Evaluate” page of the WebQuest. I will also be making some informal evaluations, such as observations on students’ participation during class discussions. (10 minutes) Evaluate
